Passive learning is challenging!

This challenge is true for both the learner and the facilitator.

Have you ever tried to:

  1. Learn for the CDMP Data Management Fundamentals exam by reading the entire DMBOK (Data Management Body of Knowledge)

  2. Attend our four-day Data Management for Certification course and not ask a single question or do a single quiz

  3. Watch hours of online videos on Data Management

You understand the struggle if you have ever attempted one of the abovementioned challenges. The worst part is realising you may need to do it again.

The answer to these learning challenges is active learning.

Active learning is very similar to active listening.

You need to listen actively to ensure you keep track of the conversation.

You cannot look at your Apple watch or phone while conversing. You cannot just listen; you will get distracted and stop following.

How do we actively listen:

  1. Ask questions to clarify your understanding

  2. Restating points to ensure that you are withholding judgement

  3. Observing the verbal and non-verbal messages

Active listening allows the person communicating to confirm that they have shared their message correctly.

Christine helped us understand active learning is about participating and having fun whilst improving your learning experience.

Before participating in the learning engagement, ensure that you are aware of the magnitude of the DMBOK and desire to learn the entire DMBOK.

Whilst learning, it is beneficial to contextualise the conceptual knowledge within your organisation and apply it to the challenges you are facing. After learning about a knowledge area, actively participating in the Menti quiz and performing the related canvas quiz helps clarify your understanding and ensure you are not judging the essential concepts.

The Testing effect helps you to:

  1. Improve memory and retention

  2. Help identify what you do and don't know or agree with.

  3. Effectively revise the learning.

Christine describes how we need to develop our ability by applying the essential concepts and reinforcing what we have learnt.

Preparing, Learning, Studying, Applying and Reinforcing the Data Management concepts will forever change your data career.

If I can clarify the steps required to learn for the Data Management Fundamentals exam, it would be these:

  1. Before training

  2. Understand the breadth of the DMBOK

  3. Validate your desire to know the DMBOK

  4. During training

  5. Contextualise the essential concepts by applying them to your situation or ask someone to describe how they use it

  6. Participate in all the quizzes and recognise where your grasp of the ideas is weak or missing

  7. After training

  8. Find opportunities to apply the essential concepts

  9. Reinforce your understanding by sharing a summary of what you have learnt

Please don't forget to define the set of metrics that you will use to measure the effectiveness of the learning journey.
